Stem cells are
biological cells that have two unique characteristics. Firstly, they can
self-renew; that can divide through mitosis to produce same kind stem cells.
Secondly they can differentiate into diverse specialized cell that carries
specific functions like as brain, skin, muscles.
There are two types of stem cells:
1. Embryonic stem
cells, which are isolated from the inner cell mass (ICM or embryoblast) of
blastocysts (earlier stage of development) and
2. Adult stem
cells (somatic cells), which are found in various tissues in our bodies.
Embryonic stem cells (Pluripotent
stem cells) found in blastocyst (as ICM, inner cell mass). These stem cells
can give rise to any tissues like as brain, skin, bone and heart excluding
placenta.
What are the
sources of adult stem cells in humans?
There are three birthplaces of autologous adult stem
cells in human being:
* Bone marrow,
which needs extraction by drilling into bone (femur or iliac crest)
* Adipose tissue
(Lipid cells) needs extraction by liposuction
* Blood, which
needs extraction through pheresis ( a medical technology, the blood of donor is
passed through as machine that separates stem cells and remaining blood returns
to donor: thus called extracorporeal therapy).
What is a stem cells therapy?
In stem cells therapy, we introduce new adult stem cells
into damaged tissue to treat diseases and injuries. During stem-cell therapy,
stem cells are either injected into blood stream of patient or transplanted
into damaged tissues directly to repair damaged
